Origin
Trade Union International (TUI)
forms a part of the structure of World Federation of Trade Unions. It represents the
Public Employees, Telecommunication Employees, Health Services and allied employees,
Financial Sector employees & Municipal employees of different countries of the world.
The World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU)
was established in Paris on 3 October,1945. The constitution of WFTU provided the
formation of industry-wise TUIs. Accordingly TUI of Public & Allied
Employees was formed. TUI is an automous body but WFTU & TUIs
co-operate with each other.
The constitution of TUI
is framed in accordance with that of WFTU. The policy of TUI is also in
conformity with that of WFTU.
A Short History
Founded 27-29 Oct 1949, Berlin (German DR), as Trade Unions International
of Postal, Telegraph, Telephone and Radio Workers - Union internationale
des syndicats des travailleurs des postes, telegraphs, telephones et
radio. Present name adopted at 12 April 1955, Vienna (Austria). Current
Statute adopted by 8th International Trades Congress of Public & Allied
Employees, March 1988, Sofia (Bulgaria). In June 1996, headquarters moved
to New Delhi (India) and to Kolkata (Calcutta) in 1998 after 9th Congress
held in the city on 4-6 November, 1998.
The statute was last amended at 10th Congress held at Johannesburg, South
Africa on 20-22 March 2006.
Structure International Trades Congress (every 5 years), composed
of delegates elected by member unions in accordance with specific norms.
Directive Committee regulates activity in the period between Trades
Congresses. Directive Committee, consisting of President, 2
Vice-Presidents and General Secretary along with 14 other Directive
Committee members( as per amended Statute).
Events Congress 4 up to 1968; Moscow (USSR) 1972, Warsaw (Poland)
1977, Prague (Czechoslovakia) 1982, Sofia (Bulgaria) 1988, Berlin
(Germany) 1992, Calcutta (India) 1998 and Johannesburg (South Africa)
in 2006.
Publications Public Service (4 issues a year) in English.
Members Trade unions (50), totaling 20 million members, in 34
countries:
