World Social Forum 2004 - an important milestone in the march
towards making another world possible
TUI Seminars
Trade Unions
International of Public and Allied employees organized two
international seminars as part of WSF 2004.The first one
‘Capitalist Globalization and the Impact of Privatization and
IMF Conditionalities on Working Class, the Public and Financial
Services’ was held on18 January and the other ‘Impact of
Globalization on Labour Rights and Global Unity of Action’ on 19
January 2004. Several eminent leaders of the working class of
different countries addressed the well-attended seminars.
On the
initiation of TUI a number of international delegates and also
from PSI participated in the Seminars.
TUI Directive
Committee meeting was also held on that occasion on 17 January,
2004 at Mumbai.
Other events
The sprawling
Nesco grounds in Goregaon, Mumbai bore witness to one of the
biggest anti-globalization and anti-imperialist gatherings of
all times. Over hundred thousand delegates from over a hundred
countries attended the World Social Forum 2004 from 16-21
January 2004. Coming from far-flung corners of the world they
all gathered in the open forum with the solemn belief that
another world is possible and to work towards the cherished
goal. WSF provided a great platform for intermingling of a vast
sea of humanity of diverse colours, caste, creed and ethnic
roots representing the diverse strata of society. Truly diverse
was the humane variety. WSF 2004 was a landmark event in the
much wider process of social mobilization towards sustainable
development through people oriented alternatives.
This is the fourth edition of WSF and for the first time this
was held outside Porto Alegre in Brazil. Delegates came from all
over the world and shared their experiences and interacted
towards combating the menace of capitalist globalization in
making the world a better place to live in. Nearly hundred
thousand delegates attended the opening ceremony on 16 January.
About 1200 seminars and workshops were organized on various
themes and issues from 17 to 20 January. One of the important
features of this event was the unprecedented participation of
popular movements like those representing specially oppressed
sections, farmers and tribals in the people oriented dynamics of
WSF 2004.
WSF has indeed been successful to provide a good platform for
all those seeking to make the world a better place to live in,
to interact, to intermingle and to get to know each other better
towards forging working alliances.
